Importance of Trusting Your Instincts

Last Friday was Halloween, and I chose to dress as a witch for the occasion. I kicked off the night with seven friends, and after about an hour of trick-or-treating, we stumbled upon some other friends who were out in the same neighborhood. We decided to join them, but they were headed to a friend's house on the other side of the community to hang out and do some trick-or-treating there, which was a good ten-minute walk away.

On our way, three of my friends and I got separated from the larger group. We figured it was better to just stick to our side of the neighborhood instead of trying to catch up. So, we kept enjoying the decorations and collecting candy. Eventually, we made our way back to my friend’s place, where we dumped our candy and started trading.

Right in the middle of sorting, we got some shocking news the friends we had split from had been chased by a man in all black who tried to kidnap them. They called the cops, and thank goodness, everyone was alright. It turned out this guy had already been running from the police for suspicious activities earlier that night.

That night really taught me something that goes beyond just Halloween: trust your instincts. From the start, I wasn’t keen on going to the other side of the neighborhood. It felt too far, too dark, and a bit unsafe. I had mentioned it to a few friends, and they felt the same way, so instead of giving in to what everyone else wanted, we decided to stay put. Looking back, that choice might have kept us safe from harm.

This whole experience reminded me how crucial it is to listen to that little voice inside your head, the one that tells you when something feels off. Trusting your gut can be tricky, especially in middle school when peer pressure is real. Everyone's eager to fit in, go out, and have a good time. But sometimes, what seems like a fun idea can be a lot riskier if you analyze it a bit more closely.

Trusting your instincts isn't just about staying safe; it’s also about building confidence, being independent, and knowing when to stick to your own judgment, even if others don’t agree. That night, my decision to follow my gut helped me learn to trust myself, reminding me that doing what feels right is always the best path to take.
